Funk. Sharpie.
There’s a new name in the men’s basketball record books at West Point. After recording four assists in a win over Boston on Wednesday, Tommy Funk is now the all-time leader in career assists for the Army Black Knights.
Funk entered this season with 347 assists and now has 483 to his name, and counting. He’s dished out more dimes in a Black Knights uniform than Dylan Cox, Randy Cozzens, Ron Wilson, Kevin Houston and Josh Miller. Last season, Funk set the single season assist record at Army by distributing 172 helpers over 30 games.
(It should be noted that Army did not begin tracking career assist totals until 1981.)
A captain and a native of Warrington, Pennsylvania, the junior has been a starter since his freshman season and has seen his statistics improve each year. This season he’s averaging 11.8 points, six assists and 3.8 rebounds per-game, all career-highs. He’s also shooting 75 percent from the charity stripe and 38 percent from three-point range.
Funks’s record-setting night also put Army back on track. The 71-61 win over Boston — in which Funk had 17 points, four assists and two rebounds — snapped a four-game losing streak for the Black Knights. Army is now 12-14 overall and 7-6 in Patriot League play with five regular season contests to go.
On Saturday, the Black Knights travel to Annapolis to face rival Navy. A win would give them a season sweep against the Mids.
